The humanities are all closely interwoven in Le Sallay's curriculum. The traditional school subjects of history and geography are integrated with the literature and philosophy courses, forming a balanced whole.
In the beginning, the subjects are combined into a single chronologically organised course to give students a general idea of the humanities system and show them the links between the different subjects. In the final two years, the course switches to a thematic approach. The students consider human history in its entirety through the prism of the environment; technology; society, economics, state systems, and individual identities. We place a strong emphasis on developing humanities competencies such as oral and written communication, analysis of sources, historical understanding, and research.
Literature and linguistic aspects are taught as a combined language arts curriculum. Art history is also incorporated into this humanities curriculum. As students learn about each literary period, they also encounter the visual and performing arts of that period.
We consider writing to be a cornerstone skill. Each trimester, students produce an independently researched, fully cited, carefully edited and organised essay for final evaluation. Students also write smaller, more informal pieces throughout the semester, including research notes, short stories, satirical responses, book reviews, and more.
