Maria Olmsted is a native of St. Petersburg, Russia and was a student of semiotics and world & comparative literature under Iurii Lotman at Tartu University. While living in St. Petersburg she also worked in the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences and as Director of the Russian office of the International scholarly micropublisher, IDC, and was active in a grassroots movement for historical preservation of the amazing architecture of St.Petersburg. Since 1997 she has lived in Boston, where she founded and ran an international scholarly book business, worked in the Harvard University Library, has done considerable literary and other demanding translating and editorial work, and has taught in the Modern Languages Dept. at Northeastern University.
